An Introduction To Singing High: How To Sing With A Fuller Vocal Range

December 8, 2010

Your vocal cords are just another muscle in the body that needs to be warmed up before you use them a lot just like any other muscle. Vocal exercises are how you warm up your vocal cords and how you practice singing high and full. If you do not warm up before singing you could cause damage to your vocal cords.

First up you need to develop breath support. Singing high needs greater breath than low singing, so before you start singing songs you must do a few vocal warm ups. Start at the low end of your vocal range and gradually build up to the high point of your range.

Every time you practice try to go a little higher. Do the same thing on a hum, or buzz your lips together like when you make a raspberry. This really gets your breathing muscles warmed up.

Vocal warm ups can be sung on “la” or any other syllable. Do not try to sing something uncomfortably high straight off, or you may damage your vocal cords. They can also be sung using the buzz or lip roll to warm up your breath support. There is a vocal warm up that is sung on each note of the scale all the way up to your highest point of your range by singing the Solfege.

Once your breathing is done you want to look at your head voice or upper resonance area. High notes should be felt to vibrate in the forehead and sinuses. A way to do this is to sing notes in intervals like 1 3 5 3 1. If you know Solfege, you could sing on do mi so mi do. Do this up the scale to your highest notes, or down the scale to your lowest. Again, you can sing on syllables, words, or Solfege. Vocal sighs or yawn-slides are used to warm up the higher end of your range. Simply make a sighing noise from the top of your range and drop lower. Repeat these three or four times.

These exercises are just of few of many. There are many different versions of vocal warm ups for singers of all ranges. The best way to increase your vocal ranges is by practicing every day, especially before you sing for a long period of time.

You can select formal lessons using audio and video media to learn singing. If you want to start singing higher you should search for the highest quality lessons available.
