Create Your Own Success In The Music World

August 31, 2010

You heard it right. It is not a good idea to book a gig not unless somebody like a club owner, promoter, or booking agent asks you to perform.

A nightclub owner or manager, for instance, has a lot going on aside from booking gigs for performers who are just starting out. He will have business-related duties like payrolls, inventory, accounting, and advertising to deal with, which are much more of a priority than your band. There are also bands and performers who perform in the club already, and who are able to draw crowds to keep the business running. Club owners typically avoid the duties of scheduling acts until the very last moment, because they interfere with the more important tasks of running a business. At that point they will often book whichever act happens to walk in asking for a gig on the day the owner or manager decides to work on his event schedule.

This is something I have picked up in the years that I have booked my own bands across many cities, and there are much better ways to get performances for your band.

Then How do I Promote my Songs if I don’t book gigs?

This is a great SECRET OF MARKETING that I learned through years of experience in this industry: CREATE YOUR OWN EVENT. I present to you the Three-Step Process, which, once mastered, will completely change your view of setting up gigs.

PHASE 1: If you tell the same club owner: I want to book an EVENT at your club, I have four bands, with YOURSELF AS THE HEADLINER, and they will each bring their fans, you have just taken a huge weight off of his shoulders. With a little networking and Internet searching, it will be fairly easy to organize a few bands for an event. Most of them will be as hungry as you are for gigs, and will JUMP AT THE CHANCE!

PHASE 2: Make it a multi-artist-genre event. Imagine telling the club owner that you will also have local artists displaying their paintings, comedians doing stand-up between bands, dance teams from the local dance school performing opening routines, and social activists speaking about pertinent community issues, and they will each be binging their fans. With similar networking and Internet research this can easily be organized.

PHASE 3: Advertise your event. Contact a few local or cable TV channels, college radio stations, local FM stations, college and local newspapers, and inform them about the event. Confirm who will be coming and inform the club owner so he will know that the press will also be there providing free publicity for his club.

There are so many advantages for you in setting up an event like this. You would be able to book the event with yourself serving as the MC and THE STAR OF THE SHOW. You will be creating a lot more local fame for yourself at these events. And you will most likely be able to book similar shows at the same venue any time you wish.

Is this a lot of work, actually it can be a lot of fun connecting with so many cool people. Just make sure that most of them know from the start that the gig is for promotional purposes only, that way you can pocket most of the profits (if you decide to make it a paid event), in exchange for the time and effort spent.

This is my MASTER 3-PHASE PLAN for getting exposure for your songs at a local level. You become the Center of the Music Community!!!
