Elvis Dolls And The History Of The Performer
May 19, 2011There was a lot going on in the United States in 1935. Amelia Earhart became the first person in flight to go solo from Hawaii to California. The Lindberg baby kidnapping case was coming to a conclusion with Bruno Hauptmann’s trial. Southwestern America was plagued by the Dust Bowl which crippled farming and added to the anguish of the Great Depression. And the early part of the year, January 8 to be more specific, a baby was born who would one day become a superstar. American culture and music all over the globe would soon change forever. He altered the way people thought about music and with that came a massive craving for anything related to Mr. Presley. His records sold like hotcakes and people had to have memorabilia including things like Elvis dolls.
The story of the music starts when Presley was 19 in Memphis, Tennessee. Sam Phillips from Sun Records found Presley to be remarkably talented and gave him a recording deal. Phillips was completely spot on in his judgment of Presley’s talent. Just two years later, the singer was all over the airwaves with “Heartbreak Hotel”, his first top single of many.
Presley’s impact was far greater than that of a one-time chart-topper. Many musicians have reached the top of the charts and then somehow faded away. This is not so with Elvis. He transcended the music he brought to others. People worldwide could not get enough of “him”. It wasn’t just his music fans sought, they hungered after it all.
The result of this popularity is no big shock. His stint in the United States Army brought horror to his adoring fans. But when he returned, the hits continued, one after the other. Then he added motion pictures to his resume. He has more than 30 films to his credit, not including concert films.
His film career delivered what fans wanted – their idol in the flesh and filling up an entire movie screen. His works were not designed to challenge the thinking person, but every director would be sure to showcase his good looks and voice. The public loved it. Not counting concert films, ten of his films grossed over $20,000,000, and those are in 1960s dollars.
Hit records, live performances and films were not enough for the adoring public. This is why there became so much Elvis memorabilia. Folks could buy key chains, posters, blankets, clocks and just about anything you could think of. Anything Elvis was a hot seller. Retailers soon became his biggest fans of all.
Earlier we mentioned dolls. They were hot then and they are hot today still. Furthermore, the selection of dolls is seemingly endless. A doll might be dressed as a groom or as a soldier. Or of course, a doll could just be dressed in one of the performer’s famous stage outfits. The list of themes goes on and on. Then there are accessories and display stands for the dolls.
So even thought there was strife and hardship in 1935, there was also a ray of light that year with the gift of Mr. Presley. Throughout history, culture shifts. When we look at music, there are a few people who have had huge impacts. In the 1700s, the world was shaken up by Beethoven. In the 1900s, it was shaken up again by Elvis.
