Getting Along With Christian Hip Hop Artists

May 16, 2011

Even with the notable changes in the way religious music is composed, produced and performed, it is regrettable to note that some people still think that Christian hip hop artists do not represent the real Christian values. This is actually not true. Just as with any genre of music that is related to this religion, there are both good and bad musicians.

Looking at all of them from a general point of view and concluding that they are all not representing the face of Christianity is rather too harsh for these artists. In fact, it is unrealistic too. When reviewing musicians, it better would be to look at every individual so that you will give credit where needed and criticize where deserved.

And when you look at some of the factors they base onto write off musicians in this genre, you will be forgiven to laugh. You will hear people say that a particular musician is bad because they dress not so well. Surely! There must be more important things to base on your critics of these people than just they way they dress.

Some other people will look at the way they dance in their music and say these people are not real to their faith. What is in a dance anyway? Is there a particular way that one is supposed to dance? Although there are some scenes especially from music videos that may be suggestive, the truth is that not everyone among them does it and there is not standard code when it comes to dancing.

It does not mean that the musicians in this field are perfect though. It sure is true that there some things they do not do well, but so do musicians from all the other genres! It is therefore quite difficult to understand why the focus on those who do hip hop.

Some people have argued that the places from where these musicians present their music is the reason why they should be written off. They sing along with with secular singers and in places that are not so related to their faith and values. But hey, are they not supposed to convert souls with their music? Are they not therefore supposed to sing to the unconverted so that they may convert?

We have to change how we think about these people. The truth is that just like any other singers, they need to be supported. Criticize where necessary and give credit where due.
