Hockey Art For The Sporting Home

August 31, 2010

Hockey is a game for some, a sport for others, a business for some, a dream for others. Hockey is kids playing on a pond in the country or on a frozen city street. It’s Olympic players in their prime or Charles Schulz playing for the Diamond Icers, a team for players over the age of 75. As many versions of hockey as there are, artists are inspired by them to create hockey art. The pains and pageantry of hockey, the action and the silences are captured in paintings, sketches, computer graphics, photography and sculpture.

An artist may find inspiration in a bunch of kids choosing up sides or teams of pros squaring off before a packed arena. An artist may focus on a single player or two players in a tense moment. She may find her model in the torso of a fan painted in his team’s colors.

The image may be as nostalgic as a fading afternoon sun on a frozen pond. Or it could be a bloody bench-clearing brawl in a professional arena. You might be a face in the penalty box.

An artist may choose to focus on a small detail such as the light glinting off a single blade. Or the effort may directed at capturing the motion of two teams swirled together in a riot of color. An artist will find a theme in the loneliness of solitary practice or the joy of comradeship. An artist may strive to capture the human emotions or to focus on abstract shapes and textures.

Because hockey offers such a world of diverse themes and subjects almost anyone can be pleased and delighted by a gift of hockey art. From children’s playrooms to the living room, the office or the study there is a medium, a style and a color palette that will delight the eye and enhance any decor.

Teen age hockey fans would love a poster of a favorite player or team. A larger than life portrait of a larger than life hero would make a great gift. Another choice might be an abstract painting that captures the player in motion in a series of colorful lines and shapes.

Vintage photographs can add to a sense of tradition. A black and white photo of an historic team can add interest to the wall of a study or office. Sometimes the perfect touch for a room is not something for the wall but a three dimensional sculpture. A hockey sculpture in the living room of a sports minded family can be a focal point and make an otherwise ordinary room exciting.
