The writers also play to the audience by introducing one character each season who is worse than Dexter to help paint him as the good guy. These include the Ice Truck Killer in Season One and most recently the Trinity Killer in Season Four.
In earlier seasons, the audience learns Dex’s backstory of his own traumatic childhood which led to his damaged psyche. He was adopted by police officer Harry Morgan after watching his own mother being brutally murdered. Harry soon recognizes the dark side of his newly adopted son, and eventually teaches the boy how to channel his serial killing tendencies toward what could be considered good work.
Most of the conflict in the series centers around Dexter coming to grips with his dark side while searching for a place in society. He has a career, friends, and family. Yet his mind works so differently from everyone else that he finds himself pretending to be normal just to get along. His life is also a long string of secrets and lies as he tries to explain long absences and strange behavior.
Throughout the series, viewers have watched Dexter’s growth into a relatively respectable member of society. He married Rita, adopted her two children, and then had a baby of his own. He lives in a nice house with his family and even gets involved in neighborhood watches and attends social events. All while continuing his secret hobby to feed his killer instincts. One of his biggest concerns is juggling family and career with his dark side.
