The 2008 To 2010 Best Films From Europe

May 18, 2011

The 2011 best films from Europe as selected by the European Film Academy will be revealed on December 3rd. The academy has been presenting awards to those films it believes are deserving of the recognition since 1988. Winners are chosen both by viewers and the academy each year.

Held in Tallinn in 2010, the award show will be staged in Berlin this year because it alternates between this location and another European city each year. The top honors are considered to be the nominees that win Best Film both in the Viewer Choice and Academy chosen categories. For the past three years they have been:

People’s Choice Winners

2008′s Winner: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Young Harry Potter, a teenage wizard, is (unknowingly) involved in the return of the dark lord, Lord Voldemort. The film captures the adventures of him and his friends, another teenage wizard and a teenage witch, as they go through their fifth year at school (Hogwarts).

2009′s Winner: Slumdog Millionaire. Jamal Malik, a young Mumbai slum resident takes a shot at fortune when he goes on an Indian game show. He subsequently provokes the suspicions of the police and game show host because his appearance on the show was a great success.

2010 Mr. Nobody. Nemo Nobody, a centenarian; who frequently thinks that he is still thirty-four (34) years old, is the last full human being alive. The film is based around his account of his life in three stages to a reporter. It is set in 2092 and relies heavily on scientific theories like parallel universes and Big Bang, among others.

Film of the year selected by the Academy

Gomorrah (2008). The people in Caserta (found in the south of Italy) and Naples must live with the presence of an organized crime ring called Camorra. Using five stories to build the overall plot, the movie explores Camorra’s negative impact on their lives.

2009 The White Robin. Set immediately before the First World War, the film portrays a German village (fiction) besieged by murder, suicide, freak accidents, disappearances and fear. Although the children of a strict puritan pastor are accused by a school teacher, the strange events are never solved and those responsible for the deaths and disappearances go unpunished.

2010′s Winner: The Ghost Writer. For an aspiring British ghost writer, landing the biography of a former prime minister is a big feat however, he soon learns that Adam Lang (the book’s subject) know things that are better left uncovered. As he digs deeper, he finds himself in danger.
