In it he described how the mythical stories of almost every culture around the world share the same basic pattern. And if you compare this simple pattern to most blockbusters today, you’ll find they are very similar.
The way it normally starts out is some normal guy or girl minding their own business. Then something tragic happens, and they are forced to go on some kind of journey. The journey can either be physical, or it can be mental or symbolic.
When they head off on this journey, they realize they can’t make it alone, and they need help. So they make new friends, and form a kind of group that will help them along the way. Once their group is formed and solidified, they are ready to move on to the next phase.
The next step is that they have to face some adversary. Some evil prince, or dark lord, or even an intangible part of themselves. But face it they must. In order to do so, they must learn or acquire new skills. Often times they come into possession of some special tool or weapon.
Once the die is cast, the climax looms. The climax is always the battle between the hero and the villain. This can be a one on one battle, or they can fight by proxy. Either way, the hero usually wins. When he does, he is crowned victor in some fashion, and heads home a changed man.
When the final battle is over, and the hero has returned home, society can get back to doing what it was doing before it was interrupted by the evil villain. Everybody is happy, and the hero is recognized as being responsible for it all.
