It used to be that TV and magazine exposure pretty much determined the popularity of a big star, but these days there’s also the internet to contend with. So who’s topping the list of the gossip channels at the moment? These three selections probably won’t surprise you that much, but there’s no denying the truth.
A good icon to kick off any list would have to be Lady Gaga. She just keeps on reinventing herself, so that it’s kind of irresistible for people to hold their breath for the next incarnation or revelation. In terms of revelations, the fact that she’s seen as a major sex icon, with multiple nude appearances, certainly hasn’t done her image any harm. The most talked about music star was always Madonna, but this girl looks set to take that throne.
A young teenybopper icon that always has something to say, and is read by millions daily, is Justin Beiber. It’s kind of a depressing thought that, strictly speaking, his twitter feed has more influence than Barrack Obama’s. He came from quiet, Christian origins in Canada, and was almost held back by his mum, who disapproved of him being supported by a Jewish manager. But despite that anti-Semitic episode, he’s come out on top.
Katy Perry is always getting some space is gossip mags or similar media avenues. She’s seen as a style icon with more realistic standards than the likes of Gaga, and can also hold a tune. She came from a Christian community, singing in churches in the US until a Christian record label picked her up. From there she managed to make her own way, eventually becoming somewhat more controversial that her heritage had previously allowed. Whether being married to Russell Brand to give her a quieter life or not remains to be seen.
And those are the big names at the moment. Of course there are plenty of others in the limelight, but this trio are probably set to stay there for some time, due to clever marketing and a devout fan base.
