The Upcoming Sci Fi Movies Of 2011
April 22, 2011With summer nearly here, it is time to turn our attention once more to the cinemas. There is a large batch of upcoming sci fi movies and determining what to see and be difficult. Here’s a short rundown of some of the films coming out out later this year.
First up this summer is Thor. The ancient god falls to earth in order to learn humility and to find his humanity. Director Kenneth Brannagh, better known for his serious Shakespearean work brings a sense of gravitas to the project. Relative newcomer Chris Helmsworth is the titular character, while Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins plays Odin, the All Father.
The character has been around for seventy years, but in June Green Lantern finally makes it to the big screen. Ryan Reynolds is Hal Jordan, test pilot for Ferris Aircraft and the possessor of a strange green ring, given to him by Abin Sur. Joining his fellow Green Lanterns on the planet Oa, Hal is way over his head as a mysterious threat faces the galaxy.
Coming just in time for the Forth of July weekend is Transformers 3: Dark Side of the Moon. Shia LaBeouf returns to the franchise, this time sans Megan Fox. Little is known about the latest installment, save that a Cybertronian ship has been found on the moon. It’s up to Optimus Prime and the Autobots to reach it before the Decepticons.
In the works for nearly a decade, Cowboys and Aliens debuts in late July. Produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Jon Favreau, the film stars Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. Despite, or perhaps because of all this talent, details are sparse save that it is being played absolutely straight.
Goto motion capture actor Andy Serkis stars in the August commencement for the latest in the Planet of the Apes chain, Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It’s alternately been called a remake, a reboot and a prequel, but taking a cue from Conquest of the Planet of the Apes it features Caesar, the first evolved ape in the present day.
Out at some point later this year is a follow up to John Carpenter’s classic film The Thing, also entitled, The Thing. Less a remake than a prequel, the story gets back to the original John Campbell short story and follows the Norwegian expedition that initially found the alien menace before Kurt Russell arrived on the scene in the original movie. The filmmakers claim that close attention to detail has been paid, but with none of the original production team involved, one wonders if they will get it right.
Of course, until they reach the cinema no one can say if these movies are going be successful. Hopefully though, with this guide you will have a better idea of how to plan your summer accordingly!
