The World’s Best Music Venues
April 30, 2011A great venue can really make a music event come to life. It’s fair enough if you just want to go and see your favourite bands play wherever, but if you’ve got an open mind the joy of going along to a cool place and listening to whoever comes on stage is a music thrill that’s hard to beat. The energy is all the more powerful when you’re discovering a venue in a foreign land for the first time. These are some of the places you don’t want to miss if you’re looking for a cool night out.
England might be best known for places like The Royal Albert Hall, where opulent Victorian design sits well with classical events and grand music spectacles. But England does small and atmospheric well too. Head to Hovingham village in the North and you’ll find a community centre with a difference. The Shed, as it’s known, hosts loads of avant-garde and folk events to get your alternative groove on to. The South knows how to do crazy parties too. In London you can find The Hideout is Soho, where, if you’re very lucky, you might be able to get in on one of the private functions with the rest of the hipsters.
Hit Europe and you’ve got some incredible treats for the more hardcore night out. A38 in Budapest is a ship that used to carry coal, and now plays host to some serious dance and electronic. If you get hungry they do a weird cockerel stew to keep you going. For rock head to Wild at Heart in Berlin. It’s part of what used to be serious anarchist territory, and it’s a weird mix of whiskey, Pacific religious icons and Elvis memorabilia. Of course there’s always La Scala for some opera too.
Right at the other end of the danger spectrum you find Liquid Room in Tokyo. The Japanese clubbers are super-friendly, and the whole atmosphere, and the music, is fun and unique. The US might be well known for spectacle, but on of the lesser known incredible venues if Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington State. You almost can’t fathom the view that goes along with this open-air extravaganza.
So there’s plenty out there to enjoy. It’s just a case of getting to them, and making your way past the bouncers.
