Top Three UK Folk Venues
May 11, 2011You are always going to love and rate your favourite venues. Personally I have 2 favourites. A handful of you could agree that these two random locations (I suspect one is essentially a theatre but I was too ‘merry’ to notice) are indeed deserving of spots in the Top 3 and that’s what folk is about, bringing people to a place to create the venue and the atmosphere.
In the usual sense of the word, a venue provides music and is there for your delight on a regular basis. The folk clubs I like are regarded as front runners and are great contributors to Britain folk scene.
Without good venues no one would not come to hear the music, so having atmospheric venues to play is essential for any band or music genus.
The Green Note, London is the best- with live performances every night; this vegetarian cafe houses the folk music of the world. An eclectic mix of roots, traditional UK folk, world, jazz, country and blues, the famous Green Note makes worthy a trip to good old Camden Town.
The Nettlebed folk club is one of the UK’s longest established folk venues, the Nettlebed Folk Venue has held host to some of folk’s legends along the years. Established in 1975, this Oxfordshire club is a non profit, volunteer run venture. 12 people make up the core voluntary staff at the Nettlebed, ensuring that the legacy continues.
The Kalamazoo Club is another London club, bringing the very best of acoustic music to our ears. Some of the finest in contemporary and modern folk bands and musicians play at this venue accompanying their great in house band, The Blinkin’ Buzzards.
You choose location number four. Folk music is usually best experienced at a small folk festival especially in one of the smaller festival tents. The best location I ever visited was an old theatre in Yorkshire.
