October 31, 2010

Being patronized is the worst thing that can ever happen to people. If you are patronized by others, you will feel as if you are treated with someone who is dumb and this is not only offending but also frustrating for you.

People from all walks of life can be patronized and that they can be patronized in different ways like:

* Addressing someone improperly like using their first name when other people address them formally

* Patting the head of a soldier or a person who is disabled

* Praising someone too much after doing a menial task

* Assigning corrective tasks to other people

* Talking slowly or loudly in front an old person

* Talking to someone as though they do not know anything by simplifying everything you say

In fact, day to day objects can also patronize people too. In fact, the survey conducted by an ad agency called Saatchi & Saatchi has revealed that women felt patronized by the dominance of pink-colored products like iPods, computers and mobile phones in the market which creates stereotyping among women.

However, being patronized is not only frustrating but it can also lead to different issues concerning the self-esteem which can largely damage your performance at work or anywhere else.

According to a study that was made by the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, a lot of male bosses often patronize their female employees thus undermining their performance at work. Moreover, their bosses also patronize them by offering too many praises but never returning any incentives to them such as offering promotion or a race for a job well done.

This behavior according to Theresa Vescio, a professor of psychology from the Penn State University, has created gender differences at work.

Why Patronization Happens And What You Can Do About It

People have a tendency to patronize other people due to their own downfalls. As Hale Dwoskin noted from the Sedona Training Associates, people need to pull other people down so that they can feel good about themselves. Their insecurities and self doubt has led them to patronize other people.
