She acted in movies when it was the golden period of Hindi cinema, she could also develop a niche for herself because of her stellar performaces. Even though she wanted to become a doctor, her poor health did not allow her to be one. But Waheeda Rehman had taken training to be a Bharatanatyam dancer. She started acting in Tamil films -almost in four of them – for which her parents supported her. She performed a folk dance in the film Rojulu Maravi and it was liked by the masses.

While she was basking in the glory of her success in Hyderabad, she was selected by Guru Dutt to play a role of a vamp in his movie CID. For the performance in Guide, she won the Filmfare Best Actress Award and got good reviews. Neel Kamal released in 1968 was also another large hit. She went on to win the National Award for her sensational performance in Reshma Aur Shera. Though some of her Hindi films could not succeed. Her co-star in Shagun, Kamaljit went on to marry her and both have two kids Kashvi and Sohail.

After a long gap of twelve years, Waheeda Rehman started acting when she shifted to Mumbai after the death of Kamaljit. She chose to perform roles of grandmother and mother. Her films Om Jai Jagdish, Rang De Basanti, Water and Delhi 6 are received well by the audience.

In Waheeda Rehman film presentation, she spoke in a discussion about her commercially hit films. Even though several of her followers think that Khamoshi is her best film, a lot of others can not forget the refined performances she has given in films like Pyaasa, Guide and Teesri Kasam.
