For some they watch these films as they find them entertaining, but for others it is because they find themselves relating to the characters. Not only are films for geeks fun to watch but many find they very astute.
1. Close Encounters Of The Third Kind – This was one of the first films that Steven Spielberg directed and was his first fling in dealing with objects from outer space. The haunting melody that plays at the end of the film is what most people will instantly recognize. Yet it is also a film where we have the chance to imagine that we could actually interact with others from other planets. But what really makes this film a favourite with geeks is of course the superb special effects. Even today 30 years on from when it was first released this film is proving a hit with people.
2. Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure – The role of Ted was one that Keanu Reeves was born to play. This film took us on a trip through time with two very stupid boys who many could relate to as they wanted to be rock stars. As they make their journey through time so that they do become guitar gods they meet some very important historical characters. But what really helps to make this film that little bit cooler and less nerdy was the casting of the late George Carlin as Rufus.
3. Men In Black – This isn’t a film that helps to affirm that there may be other creatures living on Earth that a secret government agency keeps in check. But also it has been included in our Top 5 films for geeks because of the gadgets used and the amazing special effects. Also of course no geek looks awkward as they attempt to rap along with the soundtrack of this film.
4. Weird Science – Just how many guys back in 1985 when this film was released wanted to be playing the lead roles in this film? Just like Carrie Fischer, Kelly LeBrock was the quintessential geek pin up during the 1980′s. For the main characters in this film played by Ilan Mitchell-Smith and Anthony Michael Hall they had the opportunity through using computer power to create what they considered to be the perfect woman. Although the lead characters had plenty of zany adventures throughout the film it did come with a moralistic ending that John Hughes (director) was famed for.
5. Office Space – Of all the films we have selected as our Top 5 films for geeks this may not be as well known but one we consider to be great. The film tells how a group of office workers fed up with their boring sedentary lives rebel against it. On release this film bombed completely at the cinemas, but it found a completely new and much larger audience when it came out on DVD.
