Why The Yamaha Clavinova CLP320 Digital Piano Is So Popular Amongst Pianists

May 20, 2011

The Yamaha Clavinova is the company’s most popular product and has an enviable reputation as the digital piano that everyone aspires to own. But why should this be the case? What is so special about this particular Yamaha digital piano? The CLP320 is the entry level model in the highly respected Clavinova range and has many of the superb features of models at the top end of the series.

Like every model in the Yamaha Clavinova range, the CLP320 uses sampling of authentic Yamaha concert grand piano sounds. It has 3 levels of dynamic stereo sampling, which means that each piano note has been recorded at three different levels, giving greater depth to your playing. It’s so convincing that you’ll forget that there’s any difference between this digital piano and an old-fashioned upright.

If you are interested in playing an instrument that has several keyed instrument voices, this may be the digital piano for you. There is a total of ten voices, including organs, pianos, and harpsichords. There are even some stringed instrument voices. To make the piano feel more natural when being played and closer to the feel of a traditional instrument, the keys are semi-weighted. There are also three piano pedals, including a damper pedal, so you can interact with the instrument in the same way you would with a traditional pedal. Even the feel of each pedal has been carefully designed to feel like traditional pedals.

The piano includes onboard speakers for convenient playing. However, these speakers have a low power output, so you will not be able to get a good sound out of them when playing in public or large spaces. You can, however, hook up an external amplifier to get a bigger sound. Without the external amplifier, this piano will work well at home or in small, uncrowded spaces.

The digital piano also features 128 note polyphony, which covers the full MIDI range. This allows you to create more variations of the notes that you can play and provides you with smoother transitions between keys when playing single notes and chords. You may also notice that the sound is richer as a result.

To help you play music with greater accuracy, there is an onboard metronome to help you keep time. There are also special effects, such as digital reverberation and transposition. Additionally, a single track recorder allows you to record as you play, or alternatively, you can connect the piano to your computer and record the MIDI or control the piano through MIDI originating from your computer.

You also have several color choices for your Yamaha Clavinova CLP320. This model is available in cherry, polished ebony, mahogany, and rosewood, and a matching bench comes with it. You may need some help getting it to your home, however, since it weighs 46 kilograms.
